You'll want to build a Storage Facility as near/close to your Extractor Control Unit as possible. Then create a link between the two buildings. You can save yourself a little time if you control + left click the Extractor Control Unit and then left click the Storage Facility.

You will want to build everything as tight together as possible to save CPU and powergrid on your Command Center. The only link you will have to upgrade in this setup is the one you just made between your Extractor Control Unit and your Storage Facility. So select that little line in between your buildings, select Upgrade, and click upgrade. This upgrades it one step and is sufficient enough for the materials now to go from your ECU to your Storage Facility.

Click on your Extractor Control Unit and then select Products. Double click on the material listed there (for me it's Microorganisms) and then double click on your Storage Facility. If done correctly, the route should have been created.

To complete this step, click SUBMIT. The line between your Extractor Control Unit and Storage Facility should be animated. If you've got several planets to setup, you might as well go repeat steps 1-5 on all of them. You need to have about 21001 units of the base material to be able to route the rest of your factories out so this is something of a good stopping point.

The Storage Facility is like a buffer for your factories. I nickname steps 1-5 collectively as the 'Preheat Cycle' because you need to have some materials to route the rest of the setup.
